Kaya FM, home of the Afropolitan, and Bassline Live once again celebrate the best in music by bringing you a triple-threat line up on the 29th of September with three of Jozi’s most current and relevant acts in one night of music.
We are proud to be hosting The Muffinz, Bongeziwe Mabandla and Zuko Collective in a one-night-only event at the Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City.
All three acts are stand-alone crowd pleasers but collectively, the acts promise to bring a must-see night of young, fresh talent - consisting of three acts that individually have all been rated as some of the most important and relevant musical acts in the past 5 years in SA.
Zuko Collective – whether as a solo artist, just known as Zuko, or combined with her 9-piece ensemble of musicians, is an act that’s been receiving great success in and around Africa over the past few years. With Xhosa-based mantras and lyrics, Zuko’s imaginative Afro-jazz has been described as ‘conversational’ as she uses her colourful upbringing for inspiration. Having just completed a tour with Hugh Masekela as well as a host of other great shows this year and last, Zuko Collective is a must-see South African act that’s making waves in all the right places right now.
When Bongeziwe Mabandla surfaced with his debut album in 2012 he was instantly hailed as the new face of Afro-folk, effortlessly able to entwine Xhosa lyrics with traditional music and folk stylings to create something uniquely captivating. In the past 5 years he has toured Australia, Asia and Canada and appeared at several international festivals. His debut album saw him nominated for two SAMA awards and instantly elevated him with audiences and his peers.
With a unique approach to songwriting that’s added elements of spirituality and forward-looking creativity to his musical mix, he has recently signed a record deal with Universal Music which has seen him release his much-anticipated second album. He has been cited as being one of the most gifted and purposeful artists working in South Africa today and is an absolute delight to see perform live on stage.
The Muffinz, the guitar inclined, ‘liberated Afro Retro’ band with an ‘eclectic Soul tip’ have remained top of their game for the past few years since their formation. Going from the busking streets of Melville in JHB to being one of the most awarded and respected acts from SA, the 5-piece band sets the stage alight with every performance. After receiving standing ovations and performing to sold-out shows in New York, we are pleased to say The Muffinz still belong firmly on SA soil and will be closing the show for us on the 29th September at the Lyric.
Once again, stylish urban outfitters Brentwood Clothing, new affiliates to the Kaya Fm & Bassline Live series, will be on board, standing behind the rich arts an culture scene in SA through music.
These three progressive acts, not afraid to push the elements of their traditional musical upbringings, have brought fresh sounds to the Kaya FM airwaves over the past few years and the combination of them live on one stage together makes this event a fantastic addition to your diary.

Kaya FM 95.9, home of the Afropolitan, and Bassline Live are excited to be bringing one of the freshest musical collaborations to the Lyric Theatre on the 29th July in the form of Stogie T (Tumi from Tumi & The Volume) and jazz collective Rebirth Of Cool - for one night of old school jazz-infused hip-hop craftsmanship.
The show brings audiences a completely fresh interpretation of hip-hop & soul. The addition of schooled jazz maestros Rebirth Of Cool to one of South Africa’s most established and socially conscious rappers breaks new boundaries in all traditional musical sense and takes both genres to elevated heights.
Stogie T is the moniker used now by one of the countries finest rappers – Tumi (ex-Tumi & The Volume). With a career that spanned over a decade, his impact as a rapper, poet, social commentator and record label owner have garnered him the respect of his peers, both locally and abroad. The birth of Stogie T has resulted in a more outspoken, uninhibited and braver mouthpiece for his generation and through his personal journey he has come to the place where he feels he creatively belongs – making art that resonates with him at this current stage in his life.
Rebirth of Cool is a collective that, largely inspired by Miles Davis and the post-bebop jazz era, consists of highly trained and skilled musicians that celebrate their genre through the infusion of contemporary Hip-Hop sounds with the more avant-garde notes from yesteryear. Consisting of Thandi Ntuli (piano & keys), Benjamin Jafta (Bass), Siphelelo Mazibuko (Drums), DJ Kenzhero (Turntables) and Tha Muzik, the band has been touted as being one of the country’s finest groups of improv maestros around.
Taking these two world-class acts and combining them for a one-night collaboration is set to be one of the greatest musical moments ever staged in the Kaya FM & Bassline Live series. With special guests to be announced in the week, the show will consist of two 45-minute sets and is set to be one of the musical highlights of the year.

Kaya Fm, Home of the Afropolitan, and Bassline Live, leaders in music productions, are excited to announce the latest line up in the Kaya FM & Bassline Live Presents series – the magnificent Tribute Birdie Mboweni and Zoe Modiga.
These two sensational acts are on fire right now in terms of public demand and are both producing some of the freshest sounds in the Afro-pop world.
Tribute Birdie is an artist that has an electrifying presence on stage. A petite and beautiful young woman, she has the ability to wow an audience instantly as she comes alive in front of a microphone. With a strong, rich and soulful voice, she handles her jazzy, Afro-pop genre with ease and grace. Just having released her debut album ‘Birdie’ in ‘deluxe edition’ format, she has no fewer than four singles on national radio right now and is being booked for shows across the world, as well as dominating heavily back on South African soil.
Tributes’ on-stage partner for the night will be the firecracker Zoe Modiga. Known for having won the SAMRO Overseas Scholarship competition for singing, her powerful voice then saw her enter the top 8 of highly popular The Voice SA, Season 1 talent show. Another achievement this young star in the making has under her belt is her phenomenal rendition of the hymn ‘Amazing Grace’ that featured in the score of the Oscar nominated movie Noem My Skollie. Zoe has released her debut project ‘Yellow: The Novel’ earlier this year and audiences are soaking up as much as they can of this intriguing, stylish and highly unique individual.

Kaya FM 95.9 and Bassline Live Present, Jozi’s hottest music night out, presents another iconic show on Friday 14th April as we host the legendary Hugh Masekela live on stage at The Lyric Theatre, Gold Reef City.
Originally based at Bassline’s old Newtown venue, the series has happily moved and in doing so, set the bar on entertainment higher than ever before.
The Home of the Afropolitan, Kaya FM is proud to be partners in presenting the internationally renowned and phenomenal Hugh Masekela. The Jazz maestro presented his latest album No Borders exclusively on Kaya FM in November 2016. Listen out for exclusive interviews leading up to the showcase. Bra Hugh will also be performing tracks from the album live for the very first time at this event, making it even more exclusive an experience.
The Kaya Fm & Bassline Live series experienced yet another sold-out show as Thandiswa Mazwai blew the audience away with her “The Belede Experience” performance in March, seeing her jazz roots come alive in spectacular fashion.
The series has historically grown from strength to strength, culminating in the past two shows being sold out some time before performance date, and we predict with Bra Hugh it will be a similar, if not even faster rush for the box office.
Hugh Masekela needs very little introduction to South African audiences. A world-renowned flugelhornist, singer and defiant political voice, his eclectic musical style is infused with jazz and mbaqanga, combining his gravelly voice with smooth horn sounds in an ever present concern for his home and country, having lived 30 years of his life in exile.
In his career he has released well over 40 albums and at the age of 77 he released his brand new work ‘No Borders’, featuring extraordinary collaborations with diverse artists including Zimbabwean legend Oliver Mtukudzi, J Something from pop group Micasa, Thembi Mokoena, Salema Masekela and Sunny Levin.
He has been celebrated in numerous ways over the years for his outstanding work and contribution to arts and culture and is currently using his global reach to spread the word about heritage restoration in Africa. “My biggest obsession is to show Africans and the world who the people of Africa really are”, he explains, and it is this commitment to his home continent that has propelled him forward since the beginning of his career.
We are honoured to be able to have this icon join our family of superstars in the Kaya FM & Bassline Live Presents series.
